Welcome to the Garden
Demonstration Vegetable Garden
Created and maintained by the Master Gardeners of North Alabama, this area is a composite of various types of gardens to serve as models for the home gardener. The Demonstration Vegetable Garden spotlights All America Selections and heirlooms that have stood the test of time and are appropriate for growing in our region.
Four popular and practical styles of vegetable gardening are demonstrated – traditional row garden, wide row garden, raised bed garden, and square-foot garden. Numerous vegetable varieties are grown and evaluated each year and thousands of pounds of produce are donated to local organizations to help feed the needy.
Another crop “grown” in this garden is compost. Often called Black Gold, compost is the perfect soil amendment for our Alabama red clay. While called the gardener’s best friend, it is also nature’s way of recycling and making new soil. Composting is the managed process of decomposition and is the answer to many solid waste problems. Composting is a perfect way to handle the waste thrown away that doesn’t need to go to the landfill. Several different examples of structures are demonstrated to aid the home gardener in order to maximize their composting opportunities.
The Master Gardeners of North Alabama (MGNA) is a 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization that prides itself in participating in a number of community projects in Madison County that provide horticulture information to the public. MGNA meets on the second Thursday of the month in Murray Hall at the Huntsville Botanical Garden. They welcome any Master Gardener from surrounding areas to participate in their programs.
