Outstanding Plants for the Home Landscape | Virtual class offered via Zoom Webinar

Recurring event see all

September 10, 2020 @ 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm

Calling all gardeners! This dynamic four-week course is for the home gardener who wishes to improve their plant selection skills and learn more about the many different plants suitable for the home landscape. Read more about the instructor, Bryce Lane, below!

Each of the four classes will focus on a different group of plants that enhance the home landscape, such as annuals, perennials, and small trees. The discussion will begin with general information about the plant group, including selection criteria, soil preference, exposure requirements, and more. Next, the class will take a closer look at some of the most desirable, interesting, and high-performing plants in that category. Finally, each class will end with an open Q&A session, allowing plenty of time to discuss how to apply what you’ve learned to enhance your own garden.

For each class, you will receive a digital handout of all the plants covered that evening, plus a PDF file of the PowerPoint lecture.

About the Virtual Classroom: This class will take place in the comfort of your home via Zoom Webinar. Zoom Webinar has no additional cost and is very easy to use. About Bryce Lane

Bryce H. Lane
Alumni Distinguished Undergraduate Professor Emeritus
Lecturer Emeritus
Department of Horticultural Science, NC State University

Bryce grew up in Western Massachusetts, where he discovered his passion for plants and telling others about them, working at a local garden center through high school and college. After earning his B.S. in plant science from the University of Massachusetts in 1979 and an M.S. in horticulture from The Ohio State University in 1981, he came to the Department of Horticultural Science at NC State University as a lecturer, teaching in both the two-year and four-year undergraduate programs. He taught numerous classes, ranging from Plant Identification to Introductory Horticulture, to Garden center Operations.  In 1987, he became the undergraduate coordinator, serving the department in that capacity until he retired with 33 years of service. Bryce taught both large and small courses, for majors and non-majors. In the past 30+ years, he has taught more than 20,000 students. He has received numerous local, regional, and national teaching awards and is frequently invited to speak at many workshops and symposia, about horticulture and gardening as well as teaching and leadership. He hosted and produced a three-time, Emmy winning UNC TV public television show called "In the Garden With Bryce Lane" which was on the air for 11 seasons.

Although Bryce “retired” from NC State in January 2014, he is quite busy in the next chapter of his career. He still teaches horticulture part-time at NC State University and also teaches numerous evening classes (face to face and now online) at the JC Raulston Arboretum. He is a popular speaker for garden symposia, workshops, and conferences, and also works with NC Cooperative Extension, doing agent training on how to produce effective educational videos. He is also the host of a gardening podcast offered through a local garden center in Raleigh NC entitled Logan Garden Shop Podcast Featuring Bryce Lane.

Bryce has gardened on the same property for 37 years! He and his wife Sue of 43 years have 2 happily married daughters and 6 fantastic grandchildren who all live nearby.
