Winter Tree Identification
March 1, 2020 @ 1:30 pm - 4:30 pm
Instructor: Chris Stuhlinger, Certified Arborist
Want to learn how to identify native trees by using only bark, twig, and fruit characteristics?
This one-session class (repeated March 1) will teach attendees the basic principles of using combinations of tree characteristics such as overall growth habit, bark, twigs, buds, and fruit to identify about 20 trees (without leaves), at least to the family or genus level. The focus of the class is primarily on overstory and understory trees native to northern Alabama. Included will be an introduction to the use of a dichotomous key for tree identification.
We will meet in the Anderson Education Classroom in the Nature Center for an introduction to winter tree identification and then walk through the Garden to identify various trees. Please dress for the weather and wear comfortable walking shoes. In case of truly unpleasant weather, the class will be held inside.
Please download the dichotomous key and bring it with you to class: Winter Tree ID Key
