About Your Instructor:
Karolina is a dedicated educator with 10 years of experience in teaching people of all ages. She began her career in New York City, where she developed creative solutions for gardening in small spaces. Currently, she serves as the Horticulture Educator at the Huntsville Botanical Gardens, where she shares her knowledge and love of plants with the community. Karolina holds a Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science and Sustainability from Kean University. Now living in Decatur, she enjoys exploring the numerous outdoor recreational activities that Alabama has to offer in her free time.

A Walk in the Woods: How to Identify Woody Plants in the Garden

Come to the Garden and enjoy the fall weather in this introductory course to woody plant identification. Students will learn the basics of how to identify shrubs and trees by examining leaf shapes, twigs, buds, and bark of several different species. This class will begin in the classroom to discuss identification essentials and progress to a walk through the Garden to practice skills.

Please dress appropriately for weather. Students are encouraged to bring their own binoculars, notebooks, and plant ID books if they desire. Worksheets and clipboards will be provided.

Cost of class includes a copy of Tree Finder: A Manual for Identification of Trees by Their Leaves and a 10x-21mm Magnifier Loupe to take home.

This class will take place in person at the Huntsville Botanical Garden. Attendees will be emailed location information the week of the class. The class will begin promptly at 10:00am., so please arrive at the Garden 10 minutes early to allow time to travel to the class location.

About Your Instructor:
Toby Gray joined Huntsville Botanical Garden as Plant Recorder in October of 2022. He grew up in North Carolina where he worked for sixteen years in the residential landscape installation business. He has a master’s degree in Landscape Architecture and a PhD in Geography, both from Mississippi State University in Starkville, Mississippi. He is an avid amateur botanist and a past president of the Mississippi Native Plant Society.

Migrating Monarchs | Family Field Trip

Join us as we explore the world of the Monarch butterfly. We will learn about their life cycle, migration patterns, and the importance of conservation efforts during our guided walk through the Garden. We will play games and have a puppet to help children of all ages better understand these important and endangered pollinators. Participants will get the chance to help with tagging Monarch butterflies to help track the migration process.
