Accessibility at Huntsville Botanical Garden

Huntsville Botanical Garden is designed to be welcoming and enjoyable for guests of all abilities. Whether you are visiting with a disability or planning a trip with someone who has access needs, this page is here to help you plan your day with confidence. 

The Garden has been independently assessed by Wheel the World, an international accessibility organization, and received an overall accessibility score of 4.88 out of 5, well above the national average.

Step-Free Access
  • All major entrances and primary attractions are at ground level.
Paths & Trails
  • Most garden paths are wide, stable, and flat or gently sloped and include benches. 
  • Paths: All major Garden paths are paved, with shorter, connecting interior paths consisting of gravel, mulch, or mixed terrain. 
  • Trails: The Garden’s trails are gravel, mulch, or mixed terrain. 
  • Note: The upper Dogwood trail is not recommended for mobility scooters [Garden Map]
Wheelchairs/Mobility Scooters
  • Available free of charge on a first-come, first-served basis at the Propst Guest Center. 
    • (Current Stock: 2 mobility scooters, 6 push wheelchairs) 
  • The Garden’s mobility scooters are unavailable for checkout during poor weather, such as rain. 
Restrooms

Accessible restrooms are located in multiple locations throughout the Garden and are equipped with infant/child changing tables. [Garden Map]

  • Propst Guest Center: men’s and women’s 
  • Anderson Education Center: men’s, women’s, individual family restroom
  • South Loop Restrooms: men’s and women’s

A Note About Doors & Assistance

  • Most Garden buildings offer step-free access and spacious interiors. Some doors—including those at the Anderson Education Center, the Purdy Butterfly House, and the Demonstration Vegetable Garden—are manual and may require assistance for some guests.
  • If you need support, please let a staff member know—we’re happy to help.
Service Animals & Pets

Huntsville Botanical Garden welcomes trained service animals in accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

Service Animals

  • Service animals that are individually trained to perform specific tasks for a person with a disability are welcome throughout the Garden during all operating hours.
  • Please note that emotional support animals, comfort animals, therapy animals, and companion animals that are not trained service animals do not qualify as service animals under the ADA and are only permitted in the Garden on designated pet days.

Pet-Friendly Days

  • Pet cats and dogs are welcome on designated days:
    • January–February: Cats and dogs are welcome daily.
    • March–December:
      • Mondays: Pet cats are welcome.
      • Thursdays: Pet dogs are welcome.
  • Pets are not permitted on non-designated days.

Garden Trams
  • Garden Tram Tours are available as an admission add-on, departing from the front of the Propst Guest Center every half hour (*with the exception of lunch hour), Thursdays-Sundays. Learn more!
    • Tram Service Lunch Hours:
      • ADA Tram: 12:00 p.m. – 1:00 p.m.
      • 11-Passenger Tram: 12:30 p.m. – 1:30 p.m.
  • An ADA-accessible tram is available with space for one wheelchair. This tram is intended for guests who are unable to leave their mobility device. 
  • Animals, except service animals, are not permitted on the Garden Trams.
  • Please note: The guided tours include amplified sound through a Bluetooth speaker.
    Accessibility Services & Communication Support

    To support a wide range of needs, the Garden offers: 

    • Clear signage with icons and visual cues 
    • Assistive listening support for select programs and events 
    • Closed captioning or subtitles for some digital content

    Admission
    • Garden admission can be purchased online in advance, but is not required. Guests may purchase tickets at the admissions desk in the Propst Guest Center upon arrival or use their Garden Membership to enter. 

    • The Garden participates in the Museums for All program. Guests with valid EBT cards and a photo ID may receive admission for $3 per guest for up to 4 guests in a party. 

    • Please note: The Garden is a cashless facility. Credit/debit cards are accepted at all points of sale. 
    Parking & Entry
    • There is only one entrance to the interior of the Garden. Guests may enter through the Propst Guest Center. [Garden Map] 

    • Accessible parking spaces are available in the Azalea and Dogwood parking lots. From the parking area, guests can access the Propst Guest Center and main pathways via step-free routes. 

    • Guests may also drop off guests at the front entrance to the Propst Guest Center, where there is a sidewalk cutout and automatic push-button doors to enter the Propst Guest Center. 

    • For handicapped parking options and a flat surface from parking to entry, guests wishing to tour the Garden are encouraged to park in the Azalea Parking Lot. 

    Propst Guest Center

    The Propst Guest Center features: 

    • Automatic push-button doors 
    • Wide entryways and interior circulation 
    • Accessible restrooms 
    • Access to wheelchairs, mobility scooters, and visitor assistance 
    • Food and drink options (Fern & Feast Bistro) 
    • Seating available 
    • Sensory Backpacks available upon request 
    Paths, Trails, & Outdoor Areas

    Huntsville Botanical Garden features a mix of paved, cement, and natural (gravel or mulched) walking surfaces. Wheel the World independent assessment confirms that: 

    • Primary garden paths are wide enough for wheelchair use 
    • Most outdoor areas are flat or gently sloped 
    • All major garden spaces offer step-free access 
    • A designated sensory-friendly area is located in the Garden of Hope, for guests needing a break from sensory stimulation. [Garden Map]

    Because the Garden is a living, outdoor environment, some natural surfaces may feel uneven, especially after rain. Guests are encouraged to choose routes that best suit their comfort level. 

    Day-of Conditions & Weather

    As an outdoor garden, conditions may change due to weather, seasonal maintenance, or special events. For the most up-to-date information on path conditions or temporary closures, please check with Guest Experience at the admissions desk in the Propst Guest Center upon arrival. 

    Suggested Accessible Experiences

    Garden Highlights Visit

    60 – 90 minutes

    A mostly flat route featuring wide paths, shade, nearby seating, and access to restrooms. Ideal for first-time visitors or those who prefer shorter distances. The Garden Highlights route offers a curated self-guided journey through some of the most scenic and popular areas of the Huntsville Botanical Garden, designed to showcase a diverse mix of landscapes, seasonal color, and signature attractions. Along the way, guests experience a balance of cultivated beauty and peaceful nature, with opportunities to visit family-friendly spots like the Train Garden and Pollinator Walk, making it an ideal overview of the Garden’s highlights in a single, enjoyable walk. 

    Purdy Butterfly House & Mother Earth Troll Garden

    *Recommended mid-April – September for butterfly season

    60 – 75 minutes

    Includes indoor and outdoor experiences with accessible paths and restrooms nearby. Please note: the Anderson Education Center (AEC) has a manual door; staff assistance is not available. Within the AEC, the Purdy Butterfly House entrance has a manual door; staff assistance is available. 

    • The ramp to the observation deck within the Purdy Butterfly House is not accessible if using a mobility scooter. 
    • Mobility scooters CAN navigate the Mother Earth Troll Garden, only on fair-weather days.  
    • The Anderson Education Center is indoor and air-conditioned. The Purdy Butterfly House is an open-air, screened-in space. 

    Purdy Butterfly House, Tweetsville, & Wicks Family Garden

    *Recommended mid-April – September for butterfly season

    45-75 minutes

    Includes indoor and outdoor experiences with accessible paths and restrooms nearby. Please note: the Anderson Education Center (AEC) has a manual door; staff assistance is not available. Within the AEC, the Purdy Butterfly House entrance has a manual door; staff assistance is available. 

    • The ramp to the observation deck within the Purdy Butterfly House is not accessible if using a mobility scooter. 
    • The Anderson Education Center is indoor and air-conditioned. The Purdy Butterfly House is an open-air, screened-in space. 

      Family-Friendly & Mobility-Friendly Stop

      The Wicks Family Garden and surrounding areas offer step-free access, wide walkways, benches, limited shade, and nearby amenities, making it a comfortable option for multigenerational visits. 

      Dining & Shopping Accessibility

      Outside Food and Beverages:
      Guests are welcome to bring outside food and beverages into the Garden for personal consumption.
      However, outside alcoholic beverages are strictly prohibited.

      Fern & Feast Bistro

      • Step-free entrance 
      • Wide interior circulation 
      • Accessible table heights and seating options 
      • Large-print menus are available upon request 
      • Select vegetarian and gluten-free options are available

      *Bistro may feature food items with strong scents
      *Soft ambient music plays on the sound system
      *A video wall located adjacent to the Bistro displays video content throughout the day. Videos may change periodically and may include motion, animation, and varying visual effects.

      The Chrysalis

      • Ground-level, step-free entrance 
      • Wide aisles and turning space 
      • Accessible checkout area 

      *Gift shop may feature merchandise with strong scents or toys that produce sound 

      *Soft ambient music plays on the sound system
