Backyard Composting | Adult Education Class

Compost returns valuable nutrients to the soil and your plants will soak it right up with the sun and rain. Discover how easy it is to create and maintain compost bins in your own backyard. Learn the process to create that “black gold” compost generated from your vegetable and yard scraps to feed your plants. This class will teach you how to create a 3-bin compost system in addition to exploring other options to choose from depending on your space. Learn how to get started with composting and the benefits it provides for the plants in your yard and garden.
Additional Information: This class will take place in-person at the Huntsville Botanical Garden. The location will be shared through email to registrants prior to the date of the class.

About Your Instructor:
Kathy A. Gardner was certified as a Master Gardener in 2016 and is an active member of the Master Gardeners of North Alabama (MGNA). On behalf of MGNA, she served as the Volunteer Director of the Compost Demonstration Project (located at the Huntsville Botanical Garden, Master Gardeners’ section) from 2017-2019. She speaks locally about backyard composting, Monarch conservation, and planting for pollinators – a few of her favorite activities. Her residential yard in Madison is a Certified Monarch Way Station by Monarch Watch, a Certified Wildlife Habitat by the National Wildlife Federation, a Certified Butterfly Garden by the North American Butterfly Association and is registered with Pollinator Partnership’s Million Pollinator Garden Challenge.
Kathy was recognized in 2021 by Madison’s Rotary Club for her efforts with the Monarch Butterfly and Pollinator Garden at Dublin Park. She works for the U.S. Army on Redstone Arsenal as an Executive Officer. She is an Army Veteran and a graduate of Oakland University in Rochester, Michigan. She has been married to Richard Gardner for nearly 40 years.
Kathy is passionate about supporting pollinators by identifying and planting nectar-rich plants. She is currently enrolled in Pollinator Partnership’s 2025 Pollinator Steward Certification Program.
