We’ll bring the Garden to you!

Let us make STEM come alive for your students—in your own classroom!

Each 45-minute STEM on the Road class is led by our certified instructors and environmental educators as they guide your students through hands-on, engaging activities that extend the Garden into your classroom and are in alignment with Alabama Science Standards.

Class Options

All Huntsville Botanical Garden educational programs are in line with Alabama State Science Standards.

STEM on the Road classes require advanced registration and are designed for individual classrooms of up to 30 students. Each class includes two program guides and all materials needed for hands-on activities, ensuring an engaging and educational experience. We are able to bring STEM on the Road directly to school campuses within a 20-mile radius of the Huntsville Botanical Garden.
Fees are charged per class and cover all included resources.

K–3rd Grade Class Options

Vermiculture

Dive into the world of worms and discover how they help recycle food scraps into nutrient-rich compost! In this fun, hands-on class, students will learn about vermiculture, the process of composting with worms. They’ll explore the worms’ habitat and observe their behavior.

AL Science Standards: K.3, K.4, K.5, K.6, 1.5, 2.7, 3.10

Microscopes

In this class, students will learn how to use handheld microscopes to observe tiny details in everyday objects like leaves, insects, and rocks. Perfect for curious young scientists, this hands-on class will spark a sense of wonder as they explore the hidden details of the natural world around them.

Bird Beaks

Students will explore different types of bird beaks and learn how each shape is perfectly adapted for eating certain foods, from cracking seeds to catching fish. Through fun activities and experiments, they’ll gain a deeper understanding of how birds use their beaks as essential tools in their daily lives.

4th–6th Grade Class Options

Enviroscape/Potomac

Explore how watersheds work and how human activities impact water quality using the interactive Enviroscape model. Students will visualize water flow from precipitation to rivers and learn how pollutants can affect our water systems. This hands-on class highlights the importance of protecting our water resources and encourages environmental stewardship.

Soil Testing

Through fun experiments, students will explore different soil types, test for pH levels, and discover what nutrients plants need to grow. Perfect for young scientists and budding gardeners, this class offers a hands-on introduction to understanding the importance of healthy soil in our environment.

Water Testing

Must have access to natural water on school property.

Students will become water scientists as they learn how to test water quality. They’ll explore pH levels, turbidity, hardness, alkalinity, and oxygen levels. This class is perfect for curious minds interested in protecting our water resources and understanding the science behind clean water.
