Why We Celebrate | What is a Public Garden?
At Huntsville Botanical Garden, National Public Gardens Day is a celebration of our roots. Founded in 1988 by 14 visionary citizens, our Garden was built on a shared dream—to create a place of beauty, learning, and connection to nature for the Huntsville community.
Public gardens are living museums that preserve and display plant collections for education, enjoyment, conservation, and research. They support well-being, spark discovery, and deepen our connection to the natural world.
This day is a chance to honor our beginnings and the vital role public gardens play in enriching lives and communities.
Join the National Photo Scavenger Hunt
As part of the celebration, the American Public Gardens Association is hosting a Photo Scavenger Hunt. On May 9, share a photo of your favorite spring bloom on social media using the hashtags #GoPublicGardensDays and #GoPublicGardens.
Photos may be featured on the Association’s Instagram and Facebook stories—so grab your camera and start your garden adventure!
(Bonus: Tag @hsvgarden and use #HSVgarden to be featured on Huntsville Botanical Garden’s social media pages)
