New Resident on the Birding Trail

The day before the 3 June Members Pop-up early morning birding tour, Garden staff observed 2 owls near a nesting box on the upper Dogwood Trail. During the tour, we were very fortunate to not only find a Screech Owl, but discovered it has apparently taken up residence in one of two owl houses installed in February at the Garden by William Kilpatrick for his Eagle Scout Project. This is the first sighting of a Screech Owl in the Garden. The attached photo was taken by Garden member Mitchell Halcomb on the tour. With this new bird sighting the Garden bird species count is now 112 with the Screech Owl and a Red-headed Woodpecker added to the official eBird list.
